Futurist dub pop duo Standish/Carlyon announce album launch shows in Melbourne and Sydney in July/August for their acclaimed debut albumDeleted Scenes. These come after their upcoming dates supporting Kirin J Callinan on his national tour.

Conrad Standish and Tom Carlyon, both formerly of shadowy rock group Devastations, continue the process begun on the final Devastations album Yes, U, moving away from full-band arrangements towards submerged electronic rhythms and late-night altered states.

The atmosphere throughout is one of surreal chic. In rich baritone or impressive falsetto, Standish intones dark, absurdist lyrics over the band’s shimmering take on dub, a sensual, ultramodern gloss disturbed by deep vibrations.

There’s the pulse-quickening progression of Moves, Moves, the spectral faux-soul of Feb Love (featuring vocals from Standish’s wife Jonnine, one-half of HTRK), the icy grind of Gucci Mountain, the synthetic/fractured funk of Nono/Yoyo or the deviant denouement that is 2 5 1 1, a collaboration with Benjamin John Power of Blanck Mass and Fuck Buttons.

Standish/Carlyon have played Belgium’s Sonic City Festival (curated by Liars), as well as All Tomorrow’s Parties sister festival I’ll Be Your Mirror, alongside the likes of My Bloody Valentine, Pere Ubu and Einsturzende Neubauten.

Chapter Musc is excited to announce Howling At All Hours, the new album by international DIY pop icons the Cannanes. First forming in Sydney in the mid 1980s, they have released ten albums on labels all around the world, toured the US, UK, Mexico, Japan and Europe innumerable times and been immortalised in books and documentaries by devoted fans.

The Cannanes have always done things their own way. Their first two albums African Man’s Tomato (1988) and A Love Affair With Nature(1989) were self-released on no label at all, but the band subsequently became stalwarts of iconic 90s US indie imprints like K Records, Ajax and Feel Good All Over. They began touring the US and UK regularly, achieving the distinction of becoming one of the best-known unknown Australian bands inter- nationally.

Chapter Music released a Cannanes single in 1996 and the album Living The Dream in 2000. In 2002 their Trouble Seemed So Far Away album earned considerable Triple J support, and their clip for single You Name It was chosen to be the first song played on Rage to welcome in the new millennium. Howling is the first new album since Trouble, but admittedly the band have been distracted by side projects, recording, regular gigs and touring in Australia, USA, Japan, USA, Mexico, headlining the New York Pop Fest in 2008, playing the UK Indietracks Festival in 2010, and various other pursuits. In 2012 a Cannanes song was featured in the TV film & DVD Underground, about Julian Assange’s early years, and the band even recently got to design their own limited edition Converse sneaker!

But now it’s high time to release upon the unsuspecting world some new recordings…New EP Small Batch, on the Cannanes’ own Lamingtone label, got an ecstatic response on its release earlier this year, and now the same lineup that recorded A Love Affair With Nature has regrouped – in fact the new album is subtitled A Love Affair With Nature II.

Vocalist Fran Gibson, guitarist Stephen O’Neil and prodigal drummer David Nichols are the core trio, but Howling also features cameos from sometime Cannanes members James Dutton (Flywheel, Deep Country ), Mia Schoen (New Estate, Sleepy Township) and Fran Bussey (Nice, Dusken Lights). After such a long wait, it’s reassuring to discover that Howling At All Hours is as engaging and idiosyncratic as anything the band have ever done.

It’s true that Melbourne deep pop thinkers Dick Diver are launching their fulsomely-praised second album Calendar Days this Friday April 19, with one sold out show at Melbourne’s Tote Hotel, supported by Milk Teddy and Free Time. But where does that leave the band’s hordes of rabid fans who aren’t among the 300 or so lucky enough to get their mitts on a ticket? Don’t Dick Diver care about their fans in other parts of the country, or even the ones who were a bit slow off the mark in Melbourne?

Well never fear, because Dick Diver care about each and every one of you. So they’ve organised the Calendar Days Big Tour for July, taking in no less than six towns around the countryside. In Melbourne they’re playing a huge show at the Corner Hotel presented by Triple R, with very special guests Twerps and the Stevens. Sprawling Melbourne psych-rock quintet Beaches reveal new single Send Them Away, and announce launch dates for their second album She Beats, due out on Chapter Music on May 3.

It’s been five years since debut album Beaches, which was shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize and made it into 2010 book 100 Best Australian Albums. In the intervening years, the band have toured the US twice, played All Tomorrow’s Parties at the invitation of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, released an EP for NYC label Mexican Summer, shared stages with the likes of Roky Erickson, Deerhunter and Wooden Shjips, and even celebrated the birth of beautiful twin daughters to guitarist Alison Bolger.

But a second album was always on the cards. For She Beats, Beaches have once again joined forces with producer Jack Farley (Twerps, Scott & Charlene’s Wedding). And like its predecessor, the album reflects a love for 60s pop, 70s psych, shoe-gaze, prog, southern boogie and Krautrock. But She Beats is bigger, bolder and more ambitious than the debut.

Teaser track Distance, one of two on the album to feature German guitar icon Michael Rother (Neu, Harmonia), emerged last month and has already racked up more than 30,000 Soundcloud plays. Tracks like Out Of Mind, Runaway and new single Send Them Away are upfront, glorious pop. Elsewhere, Veda sees the band extending hypnotically eastward, while droning cello scrapes introduce Tanzanite. All up, She Beats is rich, confident and layered, a multi-dimensional sonic world to get lost in over and over again.

Scratchy Melbourne pop foursome the Stevens re-release their debut EP on Chapter Music next week, and have teed up a couple of killer shows to launch it. They play Sydney’s Old Fitzroy Hotel on Saturday April 27, and return for a hometown launch at Melbourne’s Tote Hotel on Friday May 17.

Centred around guitarists Alex MacFarlane and Travis MacDonald, the young band released a 6 song EP in 2012 that was without doubt one of the catchiest non-Chapter releases of the year. Originally on CD-R and cassette, Chapter is now reissuing the self-titled EP as a handsome 7″ vinyl affair on Friday April 5, 2013. Check out Look Back on Chapter’s Soundcloud.

The EP comes in advance of a debut album, now in the process of being completed with ubiquitous rockstar engineer Mikey Young (Eddy Current, Total Control).
